It is rumored that Michiganders were first called Wolverines by Ohioans after the 1835 dispute with Michigan over Toledo and access to Lake Erie. Michiganders were described as being vicious and bloodthirsty, fighting like wolverines. University of Michigan students also identify as Wolverines.
As for the actual wolverine animal being in Michigan? We don’t really have those. The last one was sighted in Michigan in the 1800’s, until there was a singular wolverine seen in the early 2000’s. She died of natural causes in 2010.
